Burning Questions with author Liz Lawson

"How do you put yourself back together when it seems like you've lost it all?" - The Lucky Ones

Today we have a very special guest feature on the blog! Please welcome, Liz Lawson debut author of THE LUCKY ONES as she answers some burning questions for us!

Q: In 3 words each, how would you describe your two main characters, May and Zach?

Liz Lawson: At the beginning of the book I’d say:

May: angry, lost, lonely

Zach: bewildered, anxious, tentatively hopeful

Q: Start to finish, how long has THE LUCKY ONES been in the works?

LL: I wrote the first sentence of THE LUCKY ONES about … four and a half years ago now! It took me a while to start taking the writing of it seriously, so the first draft took around two years, and then revisions took around four months. And it’s been a year and a half since we sold it (very normal publishing timeline)!

Q: You’re sent on an emergency rescue mission to Mars. Which character from THE LUCKY ONES would you choose to tag along and be your trusty sidekick?

LL: DEFINITELY Lucy. She’s the most level-headed character, and would absolutely be able to handle any situation that’s thrown at us. She’s May’s rock in the book.

Q: What’s your go-to song to get yourself in the mindset to tackle the day?

LL: I love the song HERE IN SPIRIT by Jim James. It’s beautiful and uplifting and never fails to lift my spirits.

Q: You’re given one GIF to describe your novel... what is it?

LL:

Q:Finally, what was your inspiration behind this novel?

LL: I grew up and graduated from high school right when Columbine happened, and that changed the entire landscape of our country, forever. I started writing this book for all the kids who are faced with this reality, day in and out. I wrote it for the kids who have lived through the shootings that are mentioned above and the many other shootings that aren’t, and for those who fear that they might endure a similar fate someday. For those who have made their way through painful, heartbreaking times and managed to find their way through to the other side. I wanted to show them that there is hope.
