"The Deepest Roots"

"Cottonwood Hollow, Kansas, is a strange place. For the past century, every girl has been born with a special talent, like the ability to Fix any object, Heal any wound, or Find what is missing. Best friends Rome, Lux, and Mercy all have similar talents, but to them, their abilities often feel like a curse. Rome may be able to Fix anything she touches, but that won’t help her mom pay rent or make it any easier to confide in Lux and Mercy about what’s going on at home. And Rome isn’t the only one. Lux has been hiding bigger, more dangerous secrets. As Rome struggles to keep her friendships close, she discovers the truth about life in Cottonwood Hollow—that friends are stronger than curses, that trust is worth the risk, and sometimes, what you’ve been looking for has been under your feet the whole time."

Rome is a Fixer, she can fix anything she comes in contact with. Mercy is an Enough, she has just enough of everything. Lux is a siren, seductive and alluring in every way.

This book was an instant hook, kicking off in the middle of a tornado. I found the characters very relatable. Living in a small Kansas town myself it was easy to find the similarities and accuracy in the writing.

Rome, the hilarious, snarky, ever so sassy main character is the kind of person we all wish we could be. She always keeps her cool and has the perfect comeback. “we drink the blood of virgins, usually, but beef jerky is okay.” I mean honestly if that quote alone doesn’t convince you to read the book I’ve lost you.

Once I picked up this book I didn’t put it down till I finished it three hours later. One of those, “I DON’T NEED SLEEP I NEED TO DEVOUR THIS BOOK” moments. The perfect blend of magic, mystery, realism, romance, feminism, with the slightest touch of the supernatural made this a very fun book to read.

Blood sisters, together forever. Too many YA books focus on love interests as the main point and have any friends as a side note. This book was the opposite, it portrayed three best friends with an unbreakable bond trough all trials and tribulations.

One of the most appealing aspects of this book was how realistic it was. Everything was not sunshine and rainbows, it realistically had its fair share of tornadoes and hailstorms (figuratively and literally). Too many books try to have a Cinderella ending that perfectly wraps up everything up in a sparkly bow. Miranda leaves just enough untold details to leave you curious about Rome's future. Everything needs a little mystery in life, including endings. After all one ending is just the next beginning.

Will we be seeing more of Rome, Lux, and Mercy in books to come? I sincerely hope so.

Now the ultimate question, are their “gifts” truly for good or are they a curse? Guess you’ll have to read it yourself to find out.
